Racing

Point score

Most Saturday races in the first part of the season. You earn points for finishing and for beating your own best time, so every swimmer can score.

Championships

Races at the end of the season, in age groups, where places earn points and trophies. To take part in your age group you need to have swum at six Saturday race meetings first.

Handicap

A 50m freestyle sprint with staggered starts based on each swimmer’s time, so swimmers of all speeds can win. Entered at the pool before 7:30am, not online.

Time trial

Your first swim of a stroke and distance. It sets your starting time.

Marshalling

Waiting in the marshalling area once your event is called, ready to race.

Scratch race

Everyone starts together on the signal. Point score and championship races are scratch races.

Times and results

PB (personal best)

Your fastest time for a stroke and distance. Point score and championship PBs are kept separately. Equalling a PB isn’t a new one.

Seed time

The time you’re entered with: your current PB for that race. It’s used to organise the races.

NT (no time)

No time yet for that race, usually because it’s your first swim of it.

DQ (disqualified)

The swim broke a rule, so it has no official time and earns no points.

DNS (did not start)

Entered, but didn’t swim.

Lifetime best

Your fastest time ever at a Club race, including championships and trial days. Just for interest.

Carried forward

A PB from an earlier season, kept because you didn’t swim that race last season.

Trial day

A race day whose swims don’t count towards personal bests.

Ages and pools

Age group

Races are run by age group: 7 & under, 8 to 16, Senior (17–34), 35–50 and 51+. Your age for the whole season is your age on 31 March.

Long course and short course

Long course is a 50m pool, like Saturday racing at the Outdoor Memorial Pool. Short course is a 25m pool. Their times are kept separately.
