Preferred names

Choose whether swimmers go by their preferred name in Race Entry, results and emails.

Go to Race Entry

Updated

1 Choose how names are shown

Sign in to Race Entry, open Account and choose an option under Names. It applies to every swimmer in your group, and you can change it at any time.

  • Preferred name as first name only (the usual choice): a swimmer’s preferred name replaces their first name, and their surname stays the same. Nicholas Smith, who goes by Nick, shows as Nick Smith.
  • Preferred name as full name (first and last): the preferred name is used as the whole name, including a different surname. Amelia Roberts, whose preferred name is “Mia Jones”, shows as Mia Jones.
  • Official names from Swim Central: preferred names aren’t used. Nicholas Smith stays Nicholas Smith.
Where does the chosen name appear?

On the entry form, in results (including All swimmers), in Race Entry emails, and in the files the race secretary uses on race day.

What if a swimmer has no preferred name?

Nothing changes for them: their official name is used, whichever option you choose.

The preferred name already includes the surname

With Preferred name as first name only, a preferred name such as “Nick Smith” for Nicholas Smith is shortened to “Nick”, so the surname isn’t shown twice.

2 Set or change a preferred name

Preferred names come from Swim Central, so they can’t be changed in Race Entry.

  1. Sign in to Swim Central and choose Profiles from the menu.
  2. Select View Profile for the swimmer. You may be asked for your PIN.
  3. Select Edit and fill in Preferred Name: just the name or nickname the swimmer goes by (such as “Nick”), or their full name if you’ll use Preferred name as full name.
  4. Select Update Details.
I changed it, but Race Entry still shows the old name

Race Entry updates from Swim Central when the Club next brings its member list across, so a change can take a little while to appear. If it’s urgent, email swimming@pm.org.au.

The official first or last name is wrong

Official names (and dates of birth) can only be changed by Swimming NSW, not in Swim Central yourself. Contact Swimming NSW, or ask us and we’ll help.

Which name is Swim Central’s?

When a swimmer goes by a preferred name, the Swimmers tab in Race Entry also shows their name as it is in Swim Central.
